Relaxed, Natural Headshots for Creatives and Professionals

A great headshot should look like you on your best day, not like you’re being photographed. Lifestyle headshots are relaxed, natural and personal, shot outdoors, at a location that fits you, or in a clean studio-style setup in your own space. I guide you through the session so you look comfortable and confident, and you leave with images that work for your website, social media, press and anywhere else people meet you first.

Headshots for Every Kind of Creative and Business Person

Different people need their headshot to do different work. Here’s who I photograph.

Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners

Your face is part of your brand. A natural, current headshot gives your website, About page, LinkedIn profile and press mentions a personal touch that builds trust before anyone meets you.

Author Headshots for Book Covers and Press

Just wrote a book? I photograph authors for book jackets, press kits, author websites and publisher bios. Let me know your publisher’s requirements, including image usage, and we’ll plan the look, background and framing around them.

Actors and Performers

Casting directors and agents want to see you, not a stiff pose. I can photograph you with natural, expressive headshots for casting profiles, agency sites and your portfolio.

Musicians and Artists

Press photos, streaming profiles, event listings and your website all need images that look like your work sounds. We’ll choose locations and looks that fit your style.

Coaches, Consultants and Other Professionals

Whether you’re a doctor, lawyer, real estate agent, restaurant owner or consultant, a relaxed headshot helps people connect with you before the first conversation.

Don’t see yourself here? If you need a polished, natural image to represent you, this is for you. Tell me about your goals.

Lifestyle Headshots vs. Portraits and Branding Photos

Headshots are a straightforward head-and-shoulders image used professionally. Portraits tend to be a bit more intimate and artistic, and they can show more of you. If you’d like a wider variety of images that show off your business and your personality, a branding session may be a better fit. And if you need matching headshots for a whole team, see my corporate headshots.

What to Expect

  1. Chat and plan. We have a pre-shoot meeting over Zoom to talk through your goals, how you’ll use the images, and the locations and looks you want.
  2. Photo session. On the day, I guide you through relaxed, natural poses and expressions at your chosen location, whether that’s outdoors in Portland, at your workspace, or in a studio-style setup in your own space.
  3. Choose your favorites. You’ll get an online gallery of images to choose from. A simple session includes about 20, and larger sessions include more.
  4. Light retouching. Your chosen image gets a clean, natural retouch and is delivered in low-resolution (perfect for online use) and high-resolution (perfect for print) files. Additional retouched images are available.

Locations for Your Headshots

I don’t have a studio, and I think that’s an advantage. We can shoot almost anywhere: a park, a mural or waterfront in Portland, downtown streets, your office or home, or a simple studio look set up in your own space. If you’d like a different background for each look, we’ll plan the locations together.

Lifestyle Headshot FAQs

Why Do I Need Professional Headshots?

Not only actors need headshots. Entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, restaurant owners, musicians and authors all benefit from a great, current headshot. People often form a first impression from your photo before they ever talk to you.

What Should I Wear?

Think clean and minimal, without busy patterns that distract from your face. If you’d like more than one look, bring a few options and we’ll plan them together.

Do I Need Hair and Makeup Done?

Absolutely. You’ll probably be using these images professionally, so do whatever you need to look your best and feel confident. Even men can benefit from a little grooming. I’m happy to refer great hair and makeup people.

Where Will We Do the Photo Session?

Almost anywhere. Whether you want a studio look or something more natural in the background, we’ll choose locations that fit your needs.

How Many Looks and Locations Can We Do?

As many as you need. Tell me what you have in mind and I’ll build it into your quote.

Can You Photograph More Than One Person?

Yes. Business partners, duos and bands are welcome. The number of people is one of the things I factor into your quote.

How Long Is a Session?

A simple one-location, one-look session takes about 30 minutes. Sessions with multiple locations, outfit changes or more people can run a few hours.

Can My Publisher or Company Use My Headshot?

Your retouched headshot is yours to use professionally, on your website, social media, press materials and bio. If a publisher, label, agency or other company needs the images for books, advertising or other commercial use, let me know up front so I can include the right license in your quote. See my Copyright Info page for details.
